Historic Discovery in the Baltic Sea

On July 15, 2026, the Stowarzyszenie Wyprawy Wrakowe association, in collaboration with Geoings Polska, discovered the wreck of the German Type VIIC submarine U-583—one of the last submarines in the Baltic Sea that had not yet been located. The wreck lies at a depth of about 70 meters, roughly 50 nautical miles north of Ustka. Despite having spent nearly 85 years on the seafloor, it is exceptionally well-preserved, though heavily covered by fishing nets. Modern, sophisticated measurement technology was used to precisely locate and identify it.

U-583 was commissioned on August 14, 1941, and was used primarily for training purposes. On November 15, 1941, the submarine sank following a collision with the German submarine U-153. All 45 crew members lost their lives in the disaster.

The Stowarzyszenie Wyprawy Wrakowe association and Geoings Polska will work with the relevant maritime authorities to ensure the protection of the wreck. The discovery of U-583 is another significant achievement for the association, which had previously found, among other things, the wreck of the Polish escort destroyer ORP “Kujawiak” off the coast of Malta.
